Web hosting is the act of renting space and bandwidth through a company so that you may publish your web site online. You can either opt for free hosting that is usually supported with banners and pop ups, or may opt to get paid web hosting, which gives you complete control over your site contents. BigBirds.com offers two types of special accounts. Domain hosting or subdomain hosting.
A domain name is a word along with a TLD that uniquely identifies your website. For example, bigbirds.com is a domain name. If you choose to have your own unique domain name it will cost you $7.99 per year for us to register the domain. However, you can register a domain at any domain registrar and still use our $2 per month hosting service.
Consider subdomains as an extension of a domain. For example, our site is www.bigbirds.com. A subdomain would be yourname.bigbirds.com, and another would be anything.bigbirds.com. Subdomains are treated as separate sites from the main domain site. If you choose this option there is no cost per year for the name...it is free. Your website address would be www.yourname.bigbirds.com.
- Will there be forced advertising on my site - things like banner ads or popup ads?
Not at all. You are paying for webspace that is only yours - no one may put ads on your site except you.
- How can I pay for web hosting?
We accept credit cards, PayPal, and money orders.
Simply put, PayPal lets anyone with an email address send money to anyone else with an email address. Each user signs up with PayPal and then enters their necessary banking and credit card information. Once registration is completed, your email address is all you need to send and receive money.
There are no hidden costs. If you use a sub domain of bigbirds.com you pay $2 per month for your web hosting account and nothing more. If you decide to register your own domain you will have to pay the annual domain registration fee (ours is $7.99 per year) in addition to the $2 per month.
- How do I make my website?
We provide detailed instructions on how to download Ewisoft Website Builder which is a template driven web design software that enables non-technical users to create a website easily and professionally. Template driven web design separates design from content – making it possible to edit content without affecting the design or format of your website. Website content can be kept up to date without needing to have special knowledge about HTML or other Web technologies.
- How do I upload my site from my computer to your servers?
It depends. If you use the Ewisoft Website Builder software it will publish your site directly from your computer to our server. If you are more experienced uploading your site can be done in many ways, but the most popular is FTP. When your hosting account is created, you will be provided with an FTP account. Using software such as CuteFTP or WS_FTP, you can log into our servers. Then, using the program like a normal windows program, you can drag and drop files from your computer to our servers. These files become live online instantaneously.
